By the Numbers: Athlete Demographics

Registration and survey data highlight a diverse field of participants preparing for this weekend’s event:

  • The Field: 420 registered athletes are scheduled to participate across the various event formats.
  • First-Time Racers: For 165 participants (nearly 40% of the 420 surveyed), this will be their very first multisport race.
  • Pre-Race Preparation: 75 athletes have registered for the free Saturday Swim & Coaching Clinic to prepare for their open-water disciplines.
  • Geographic Reach: The race has drawn athletes from 22 U.S. states, led by California and Texas matching the local East Coast registration numbers, along with international representation from Great Britain.
  • Age Range: The field includes competitors ranging from 7 to 74 years old.

Event Options & Distances

The race features 18 different event options categorized across Sprint, Olympic, and Youth distances to allow participants to race their preferred format:

  • Sprint Events: Includes the Sprint Triathlon (147 participants), Sprint RunBikeRun (32 participants), alongside SwimBike, SwimRun, and a 400-yard Swim.
  • Olympic Events: Features the Olympic Triathlon (128 participants) and Olympic RunBikeRun (11 participants), along with SwimBike, SwimRun, and a 1640-yard Swim.
  • Running Events: Includes the Orangetheory Fitness Williamsburg 5K (44 participants) and the 10K Run (15 participants).
  • Youth Division: Comprises the Youth Sprint Triathlon (16 participants) along with options for youth Duathlon (RunBikeRun), Aquabike (SwimBike), and Aquathlon (SwimRun).

Course Details & Logistics

Athletes are responsible for studying and knowing their specific routes. Transition entry and staging vary based on the discipline.

Swim Leg

  • Location: Swim Beach at Jamestown Beach Event Park.
  • Distances: 400 yards for Sprint/Youth events and 1,640 yards for Olympic events.
  • Transition: Upon exiting the water, athletes must look for the “SWIM IN” flag to enter the transition area.

Bike Leg

  • Sprint Distance: 11.4 miles.
  • Olympic Distance: 24.5 miles.
  • Route: Cyclists head northwest out of transition, turning onto Greensprings Rd (VA-614), John Tyler Hwy (VA-5), Centerville Rd, and Brick Bat Rd, before returning to transition. Olympic distance athletes complete three of the main loop.

Run Leg

  • Sprint / 5K Distance: 3.1 miles.
  • Olympic / 10K Distance: 6.2 miles.
  • Route: Run courses lead out towards Jamestown Rd (VA-31) and head onto the paved Virginia Capital Trail. After completing their respective U-turns, runners finish back inside Jamestown Beach Park at the finish line arch.
