The 2026 Cal Tri Lake Perris was characterized by heavy rain and technical course conditions, but it also marked a significant international exchange. A high-performance delegation from the Tahitian Triathlon Federation (FTTRI) traveled to Southern California for an intensive two-week training camp, concluding their trip with a series of podium finishes at the Lake Perris State Recreation Area.

The visit was a key initiative for the FTTRI as they work to bridge the gap between Polynesian regional athletics and international elite competition.

Federation Infrastructure and Objectives

The Tahitian Triathlon Federation operates with a specific mandate: to transition promising local talent into a structured high-performance environment. Through the Polynesian Triathlon Performance Center, the FTTRI manages elite-level support programs, coach education, and a circuit of approximately 20 annual competitions across the islands.

This Los Angeles-based training camp was designed to expose their top young athletes to higher levels of competition and a different environmental stimulus than the tropical conditions of French Polynesia.

Training Background and Long-term Goals

The athletes in this delegation have trained as a cohesive unit at the Performance Center for the past two years, while the most experienced members have been active in the sport for nearly eight years.

According to FTTRI CEO and Technical Director Romain Antoine, this initiative is built for the future. “This training camp is part of a long-term vision and represents an important step in the development of our performance pathway toward the 2027 Pacific Games and future international events,” Antoine noted. “Every international experience provides our young athletes with valuable technical, tactical, and personal benchmarks that are essential for meeting the demands of the competitions ahead.”

Their participation in the California series serves two primary strategic goals:

  • Volume and Preparation: Building the necessary training load for the French Triathlon and Aquathlon National Championships scheduled for June and July 2026.
  • Pathway to 2027: Serving as a developmental milestone for athletes seeking selection for the 2027 Pacific Games.

Results and International Pedigree

Despite the drop in temperature and the steady rain that defined the Lake Perris bike and run segments, the Tahitian athletes leveraged their previous international experience to secure three major category wins.

Antoine was highly encouraged by the squad’s performance on the data sheets and their mindset on the ground. “The performances achieved during this event also confirm the continued progression of Tahitian triathlon. Our athletes demonstrated that they are capable of being competitive beyond the Pacific regional scene and of performing successfully against a different level of competition,” he said. “Beyond the results achieved at Lake Perris, we were particularly pleased with the attitude displayed by the entire group… They showed solidarity, maturity, and professionalism both in training and in competition.”

Operational Cooperation

The integration of the Tahitian team was a collaborative effort between the FTTRI and Cal Tri Events. After the youth categories initially reached capacity, organizers expanded the field to accommodate the international visitors.

Following the event, Antoine expressed deep appreciation for the host organization’s flexibility. “On behalf of the Tahitian Triathlon Federation and all the athletes who took part in this trip, I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the entire Cal Tri team for their professionalism, kindness, and the attention they showed to our delegation throughout the event,” Antoine stated. “Their warm welcome contributed greatly to the success of this trip and left a lasting positive impression on the entire group. We are grateful for this opportunity to exchange experiences and hope to continue building this relationship in the years to come.”

Technical Development

Beyond the results on the scoreboard, a primary objective of the FTTRI training camp was to foster technical and cultural exchanges between the Polynesian and Southern Californian triathlon communities. During their stay, the federation expressed a strong interest in coordinating joint training sessions with youth performance clubs in the Thousand Oaks area. By connecting athletes aged 12 to 18 with local peers, the FTTRI aims to create a shared environment where competitors and coaches can exchange methodologies and experience different tactical approaches to the sport.

For the Tahitian athletes, the shift from a tropical climate to the rain-heavy, 50-degree environment at Lake Perris provided a specific developmental advantage. Antoine highlighted how well the team handled the sudden change, noting, “Throughout the training camp, the athletes demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt to an environment that was very different from what they are accustomed to in Tahiti.”

Discovering a new racing atmosphere and competing under unfamiliar environmental stressors serves as essential preparation for the unpredictable conditions they expect at the French National Championships.

Future Outlook

As the delegation returns to Tahiti, the focus shifts toward the European summer season. Antoine views these initial milestones as a strong foundation for what’s next: “These results are an encouraging sign for the high-performance program that the federation has been developing over the past several years.”

The federation’s commitment to structured training camps and international racing continues to solidify their position as a rising force in the Pacific, with a clear trajectory toward the 2027 Games.
